Bali is renowned for its breathtaking waterfalls, but few are as photogenic as Kanto Lampo waterfall.
What sets Kanto Lampo apart from other waterfalls in Bali is its stunning black stone wall. The waterfall cascades down this natural staircase, creating a dramatic and unique visual effect.
Located just a short drive from Ubud, Kanto Lampo waterfall has become one of the most famous and most photographed spots on the island.
The different shapes and contours of the rocks make every angle photogenic. It’s no surprise this spot has become one of the most Instagrammable spots in Bali!

How to get to Kanto Lampo Waterfall

Kanto Lampo Waterfall is located a 30-minute drive from the center of Ubud and about an hour away from Canggu. It’s easily accessible by motorbike or car.
Your options to get here include:
- Renting a scooter and driving yourself if you feel confident on a bike. This is our option of choice as my partner is an experienced bike driver. Rentals start at around 80,000 IDR per day.
- Hire a private driver for the day to take you to Kanto Lampo and different spots. This is a very popular option for day trips in Bali and it works out pretty good value at around 750,000 IDR (~48 USD) for 8 hours. You can check out your options here.
- Book an organised private tour to Kanto Lampo and visit other must-see spots around Ubud. This is the best option if you want an easy, hassle-free trip without worrying about organising your schedule.
- I don’t recommend going here with Grab or Gojek. You need to make sure your driver can wait for you to take you back to Ubud. Not every taxi will be able to wait and it may be hard to find another driver to take you back. At the end, this option might not work out as cost-effective as the other ones mentioned above. So it’s better recommended to hire a private driver for the whole day and explore multiple spots.

When to visit Kanto Lampo Waterfall

Over the last few years, the waterfall has gained a reputation for being one of the busiest waterfalls in Bali, especially during peak hours of the day. Long queues of visitors often form, each waiting for their turn to get that perfect shot.
To avoid the crowds, the best time to visit Kanto Lampo is early in the morning. Arriving between 6:30-8 AM gives you the best chance to enjoy the waterfall with fewer people around.
During peak season, even at 7:30 AM, you might find a handful of visitors, but the atmosphere is still much calmer than later in the day.
Visiting early also means you can take your time capturing the beauty of the waterfall without feeling rushed.
There’s no pressure of a long queue of people watching you as you pose, making the experience a lot more relaxed and enjoyable.
Just keep in mind that in the early hours of the morning the waterfall is still out of the sun and it can get a little chilly.
Which season is it best to visit

Kanto Lampo can be enjoyed year round, although the water levels at the waterfall differ depending on the season.
During wet season (October-April), or just after, the waterfall volumes will be at their highest and make the waterfall even more magnificent.
However, this also means higher chances of rain during your visit and slippery steps, so the best time would be to visit just after rainy season.
If you visit during dry season (May-September) you’ll still be able to enjoy the waterfall but there will just be less water flow than during wet season.
We visited in the middle of August (in the middle of dry season), and for us the view was amazing! Can’t imagine what it would be like during high volume.
What to expect at Kanto Lampo Waterfall
The trek down to the waterfall
Kanto Lampo is one of the most accessible waterfalls to get to in Bali, especially in comparison to other famous ones like Nungnung waterfall and Leke Leke waterfall.
However, to reach the waterfall from the car park, you have a few minute walk down by stairs to reach Kanto Lampo.
The walk is not strenuous, but it may not be suitable for people with physical disabilities.
Getting the perfect photo at Kanto Lampo

One of the cool things about visiting Kanto Lampo are the local guides who work at the waterfall and who have become experts at taking the perfect photos.
These guides are skilled in finding the best angles and suggesting poses, making sure you get the perfect shot.
It’s especially helpful if you’re traveling solo and don’t want to rely on strangers for photos.
The guides here truly go above and beyond to capture the essence of the waterfall, so don’t hesitate to ask for their help and make sure to tip them well.
You can also set up a tripod to take your own photos. If you come here early in the morning, you won’t have any issues with this as there’s plenty of space in front of the waterfall to set this up.
However, do note that the legs of the tripod would be in the shallow riverbed so a sturdy tripod is needed to avoid accidentally getting your phone or camera wet.
Kanto Lampo Temple

Something to note that is not often mentioned is that at the bottom of the stairs, just before you reach the waterfall, there is a small Balinese temple.
If you’re lucky, you might be able to witness a cultural ceremony taking place, with local Balinese people dressed in traditional attire and carrying baskets on their heads.
This is also a reminder to be respectful and dress appropriately around the temple grounds. There are signs in front of the temple to remind not to change in front of it.
There are changing cabins located just behind the temple that you can use free of charge.
Amenities at Kanto Lampo waterfall
There are bathrooms and changing rooms near the waterfall that you can use free of charge.
There aren’t any restaurants or cafes at the waterfall, so make sure to bring water with you or a snack if you need it.
There are, however, restaurants nearby and a short drive away if you wanted to go for some food after your visit. We stopped by this lovely small restaurant with rice field views a few minute drive away from the waterfall.
