But with its popularity come the crowd of tourists and the Instagram vs Reality posts that I’m sure you’ve seen before! 🙈

However, there’s still plenty of places off the tourist track as well as ways to visit the popular spots without a crazy amount of people 🍀

Gunung Kawi Temple in Tampaksiring is one of the largest ancient temple complexes in Bali and an important sacred place for the Balisene people 🍀

What makes this temple unique amongst others are the ten ancient shrine reliefs, carved into the face of the 7-meter-high (23 ft) rock cliff niches, creating a truly breathtaking sight 🪨

Practical information:

📌 Location: Gunung Kawi Temple Tampaksiring, 30 minutes north from central Ubud

💰Entrance fee: 50k IDR (~$3)

⏰Opening times: 8:00am until 6:00pm

☀️Best time to visit: In the morning to avoid the crowds (althought this place isn’t as busy as other more popular temples in Bali)

Diamond Beach was even more beautiful in person 💛 and honestly, Nusa Penida in general is one of my favourite places I’ve ever visited! Yes, it’s very touristy but for a good reason ✨

My best tip is to stay over in Nusa Penida for a couple of nights and visit all the famous sites for sunrise or sunset to avoid the day-trippers from Bali 🍀

I guarantee you 100% you’ll have a much better experience if you do that as crowds during peak hours can be insane (we’ve all seen the viral Instagram vs reality videos from the famous sites 🤯).

For Diamond Beach, I suggest you come here for sunrise and stay a bit after when the light illuminates the beach beautifully 🌅

⚠️ If you go down to the beach be very careful of falling rocks from the top. When we were just about to go back up the steps, there was quite a few rocks falling and it was pretty scary considering the height! Protect your head! ⛑️

Tips for visiting Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida

Tips for visiting Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida 🌴

Firstly, I want to say that the famous Kelingking Beach (T-Rex beach) in Nusa Penida, Bali is just as beautiful in person as it is in photos and it’s totally worth the hype! ✨🫶

However, your experience will be greatly influenced by when you visit the beach, as during peak hours it becomes stupidly crowded 🙈

Don’t forget to save this post to help you plan your trip and have the best experience at Kelingking Beach 📌

⏰ When to visit

* Visit before 9am or after 4pm to avoid the crowds ⏱️

* Sunset is more beautiful than sunrise here due to the positioning of the beach BUT you get significantly more people at sunset than sunrise 🌅

📸 Photo tips

* Walk a couple of minutes down the stairs for fewer tourists in photos ✨

* Head to the right of the viewpoint for more secluded spots (watch out for monkeys) 🐒

* The light during sunset is better than sunrise as it falls directly on the beach. However, there will be more people than if you were to visit at sunrise (this photo was taken around 8am for reference) 🌅

* Take photos before going down the stairs, as you’ll likely be sweaty after the climb 🥵

🛵 How to get to Kelingking Beach

* The road to Kelingking is in okay condition but has a lot potholes. Definitely feels safer driving during off-peak hours of the day ⏱️

* Bring cash for parking fee & drinks/meals 💰
* You can reach the location by renting a scooter or hiring a local driver. Or by going on a day tour of Nusa Penida 🚗

* It takes approximately 30 minutes to reach from either Toyapakeh or Crystal Bay 🏖️

⛑️ Safety precautions

* Swimming is forbidden due to dangerous currents and big waves. Please don’t risk getting in the water! ❌

* Wear proper shoes for the hike down - flip-flops are not suitable 🥾

* Bring plenty of water and sunscreen 😎

* Don’t attempt to go down to the beach during sunset as the waves and hiking in the dark become more dangerous 🌊

Must-visit waterfall in Bali 🍀

Sekumpul waterfall is the tallest waterfall in Bali and one of the most beautiful on the island! 🫶

Here’s what you need to know:

📍 Location: North Bali, Sekumpul Village (around 2 hours north from Ubud)

🛵 How to get here:
By motorbike, private driver or organised day trip.

⏰ Opening hours: 8 AM - 7 PM

💡 Pro tips:

* Visit early morning (before 9 AM) to avoid the crowds
* Best time to visit: April-September when there’s less chances of rain in the area
* Wear proper shoes - path gets muddy and slippery
* Bring change of clothes

All treks now include a mandatory local guide for safety and supporting the local community.

The best part is that you’ll actually get to see THREE stunning waterfalls on this trip - Sekumpul (the tallest in Bali), Hidden Waterfall, and the beautiful triple cascade of Fiji Waterfall. Expect 300+ steep steps down to the waterfalls! 🥾

⚠️ Tip: Watch out for fake checkpoints on the way - only pay at the official ticket booth.

💰 Entrance Fees:

* Viewpoint only: 20,000 IDR
* Medium trek (Sekumpul + Hidden): 150,000 IDR
* Long trek (all 3 waterfalls): 250,000 IDR

Nature escape in Bali 🌱

Last year we spent a couple of days in this magical place that felt like a cure for my soul. Nestled in nature, surrounded with nothing but rice fields. The side of Bali where there’s no resorts, no fancy cafes and restaurants, just a couple of local shops where you can buy snacks and fully rely on the food your accommodation makes for you.

A place where time stops and you get to fully enjoy the moment, in quitude.

This is what I imagine the rest of Bali used to be like before it became the tourist hotspot it is today.

And as much as living in the more developed areas is easier for day-to-day life, I very much look forward to the weekends when we get to escape to nature & enjoy the peace and quiet of the north of the island 🧘‍♀️
